Bathroom Lighting Archives

The bathroom light is probably  the most important light in any room of the house.

Lighting is crucial to how well your bathroom functions.  The bathroom is where we all do some very detailed and important work such as applying makeup or shaving.  Obviously, you do not want to make a mistake with either one of those tasks due to poor lighting.  It is also the first place we see ourselves in the morning and the last place we see ourselves at night.  Don’t you want the sight of yourself to be a positive one?  I’ve got some tips for lighting that I learned while researching the possibilities for our own bathroom.

Tip #1 – Consult a Lighting Designer

A lighting designer will consider the bath’s overall design to determine the amount and placement of light needed in the space.  Visit the International Association of Lighting Designer’s website at www.iald.org. However, if a designer does not fit in the budget, there are many books and guides to help you along.

Tip #2 – Layer the Light

Anyone who has been in a bathroom with just one light source knows how unflattering a single source of light can be.  A bathroom remodel calls for the following 4 types of light:

  1. Task Lighting provides adequate light for applying make-up and shaving. The best way to achieve this is a pair of fixtures mounted on the wall flanking the sink or “work area”.  This is called cross illumination.
  2. Ambient Lighting is achieved by bouncing the light off the ceiling, which softens shadows and can take ten years off a person’s age.
  3. Accent lighting adds depth and dimension.  It allows you to illuminate design features, such as art, plants, or beautiful tiles.
  4. Decorative lighting, created by hanging eye-catching fixtures from the ceiling, will dress up the bath, and add some luxury.

Tip #3 – Create a Scene

Zoned lighting and dimmers can adjust for a variety of situations or “scenes”.  Different lighting scenes give you bright light in the area where you get ready in the morning, or create soft lighting for a relaxing soak in the tub.

Tip #4 – Overcome Design Challenges

Often bathrooms are located on interior walls, lacking any source of natural light.  This lack of a natural light source can feel a bit subterranean.  It is best to try to incorporate natural light wherever possible.  Experts recommend the addition of windows or skylights as part of a remodel.

Basically, if your bathroom light looks good, you will too.

What to Look for When Buying Bathroom Lighting

Are you wondering what to look for when buying bathroom lighting?  There are a few simple things to keep in mind. The first thing is of course style. Next is brightness, finally you’ll need to choose the type of light.

Style: There are all sorts of styles of bathroom lighting fixtures out there. You’ll be able to find a great unit to meet your needs in whatever style fits your bathroom and budget. When looking for styles one of your best bets is to go with a multiple bulb unit. If that isn’t to your taste then you can always go with a long fluorescent tube style lights.

Brightness: You need really bright light in the bathroom.  If you went with a multiple bulb unit then you’ll want to install the highest wattage bulb that it will accommodate. If the room is still too dark you have another option. You can install compact fluorescent bulbs into the fixture. Since compacts use much less energy than standard bulbs you can upsize the compact to get even more light out of the fixture.

Type of Light: Every type of light has a different color to it.  Fluorescent bulbs have a greenish hue to them. They’re great for general lighting but can throw off the color of the room. To counter this you can find bulbs that emit a more natural light.  You can find more natural light options at a hardware store or even a nursery that has grow lamps for their plants.

Style, brightness and the type of light are the three biggest considerations when you are deciding what to look for when buying bathroom lighting. Just look for the style that fits your bathroom, a unit that gives off plenty of light and if you’re so inclined a more natural tone.

deep-water-bathIf you are like most people, you love the idea of a luxurious soaking tub. Kicking back and feeling your body engulfed in nice warm water is heaven! Sadly it may be something you only think you can get in a spa or luxury resort.

While your tub is big enough for you to lounge back, you can’t get the water deep enough to make it feel like it’s a real good bath because as soon as the water gets to the overflow drain, it stops filling and a good portion of your body is out of water.

Now you can stop the overflow drain from doing it’s job just long enough for you to enjoy a little more depth in your tub for that well needed soak.

In many tubs, the overflow drain stops water from coming into your tub about half way up the tub. That’s a lot of open space that could be filled up to make you the perfect soaking bath. With the Deep Water Bath , you can push the plastic cover right over the overflow drain to let it fill up past that line. A set of suction cups holds it in place.

What We Like

  • This is a very economical solution to a long-standing problem in regular tubs.
  • This is an easy solution to an old problem, just push it in place and it’s ready to work for the whole bath.
  • It’s clear. That means when you put it on the side of the tub or elsewhere to store it after the bath it is not an ugly eyesore piece.

Some things to consider:

  • The suction is not as strong as we would like and sadly it doesn’t take much to dislodge the unit, ending that relaxing soak.
  • It needs to be regularly cleaned or it stores up soap scum and can have mildew.

The Importance of Proper Bathroom Lighting

Proper lighting is important in any home both for safety and ambiance. Nowhere is it more important though than in the bathroom. The importance of proper bathroom lighting revolves around just a few things.

The primary thing to consider is having enough light in the bathroom. When choosing a light fixture, look for a multi bulb assembly that gives off plenty of light. Having a multi bulb assembly offers two great benefits, more light and if one bulb burns out you still have light!

There are two different types of lighting systems that can be used, direct and indirect.

vaxcel-standford-bathroom-wall-lightIndirect lighting offers diffused overall lighting for the entire bath. Here what you’re shooting for is to bounce the light off the walls and ceiling. Indirect lighting will offer a nice gentle glow to beautify the entire room.

Direct lighting can offer a spotlight accent anywhere needed. Spotlights will add accent areas. This can help with cleaning up any fine hairs that might be hiding behind the sink.

Choosing the right type of light is important as well. While compact fluorescent bulbs are a great way to save energy, unfortunately they don’t give off a natural light. There are a few options here, you could either go with normal incandescent bulbs or you can add an extra light.

Why not add a lighted make up mirror to the bathroom. The natural light is just what’s needed for make up application or getting a close shave. Not only do lighted bathroom mirrors provide much  needed light but they also most offer slight magnification to help find the elusive stray hair or smudged eyeliner.

The importance of proper bathroom lighting is key to beautifying one of the most practical rooms in the home. Whether you choose direct or indirect lighting, incandescent or fluorescent, lighting up the bath is important to ensure safety, sanitation, and overall effect.

How To Choose the Right Bathroom Lighting

Good bathroom lighting is an essential part of your bathroom design. The right choice of lighting will add ambience and elegance to your bathroom, but keep in mind that the lighting also needs to be functional.

Lighting for bathrooms comes in a variety of styles and finishes, to suit any design. There are bulb lights, sconces, down lights, recessed lights, pendant lights, strip bath lights, shower recess lights, fluorescent lights, and of course lights with exhaust fans. Light shades suitable for bathrooms, are either plain or lightly patterned, with frosted or etched glass shades.

When considering your bathroom lighting, be mindful of where you place the lights. This is especially so over bathroom vanities. Ensure that lights around your mirror are functional and stylish and don’t cast shadows on your vanity mirror so that you have a brightly highlighted area in which to apply your makeup or for your partner to shave. Having a dimmer switch installed in your bathroom is also a great functional feature.

Apart from having your mirror well lit, ensure that you also have adequate lighting over your medicine cabinet so you are able to clearly identify the medicinal products in the cabinet.
